Braces are common in the UK, with ‘around 200,000 people fitted with braces every year’.
If you have had braces put on your teeth, you might be wondering whether you can still drink bubble tea with braces.
The answer to this question is yes, it’s perfectly safe for you to drink bubble tea with braces.
However, as bubble tea can be high in sugar, it’s best to consider bubble tea as an occasional treat, as you would with any other sugary drink when you’ve got braces.
That said, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to drinking bubble tea with braces.
Considerations when drinking bubble tea with braces include, but are not limited to:
The first thing to consider when drinking bubble tea with braces is drinking with a straw.
Bubble tea is served with a thick straw to allow you to drink and chew the bubble tea pearls at the same time.
Drinking sugary drinks with a straw and avoiding constant sipping is recommended, as it limits the contact the front of your teeth has with the sugary liquid.
That said, while drinking with a straw can help to protect the front of your teeth when drinking bubble tea, you will still have to contend with chewing the bubbles.
As braces are composed of wires and brackets, this means that the bubble tea pearls can become lodged in between the wires and the brackets if you’re not careful.
As such, it’s best to opt for popping bubbles as opposed to chewy tapioca pearls.
Something to be wary of when drinking bubble tea with braces is the sugar content.
Your dentist will have made you well aware of the fact that drinking sugary drinks with braces puts you at a higher risk of developing cavities.
This comes down to the fact that your teeth are naturally more challenging and take longer to clean with the addition of braces.
As such, individuals with braces, especially kids, need to make more of an effort to get into all of the nooks and crannies to keep them clean.
At Bubblebase, we allow you to adjust the sweetness level of some of the drinks on our menu, as it’s particularly important to be aware of the sugar content in drinks when you’ve got braces.
To take care of your teeth as best as you can, then, you should opt for a lower sweetness level and be sure to brush your teeth afterwards, which leads us onto our next point.
As we’ve already mentioned, bubble tea can be high in sugar, so practising good dental hygiene when drinking it is essential with or without braces.
That said, it’s a good idea to carry a toothbrush, as well as toothpaste when you’re out and about as this will allow you to brush your teeth as soon as you’ve drunk your bubble tea.
Additionally, if any bubble tea pearls have gotten stuck in between the wires and brackets of your braces, it’s a good idea to carry a few interdental brushes to allow you to really get into cleaning and removing any traces of the bubbles.
Failure to do this will allow the bubble tea pearls to sit on your teeth for long periods of time, allowing the sugar to settle and will increase the risk of you developing cavities.
Getting into the habit of brushing your teeth following meals is a good idea when you have braces, as this will ensure that you remove any debris and ensure that you’re practising good dental hygiene.
Hopefully this article has shown you that it’s okay to drink bubble tea in moderation with braces, but it’s best to consider it as a treat to have on occasion to protect your teeth whilst you have your braces on.
